Gabe Shawn Varges is Senior Partner in the Zurich offices of HCM, an international consulting firm, and a member of the faculty of the University of St. Gallen Executive School in Switzerland. He works around the world with boards of directors; CEOs; and heads of companies, state entities, regulators, and international organizations on the more strategic and challenging aspects of corporate governance, compensation, compliance, regulation, and supervision. An experienced executive, senior regulator, and board member, he also works with organizations to upgrade and make their approaches in the above areas more sustainable, also in the context of market changes and digitization.
Earlier, Gabe served as Head of Governance of the Swiss financial services regulator where he supervised banks and insurers; and represented the authority on international bodies such as the OECD, Financial Stability Board, International Association of Insurance Regulators, and Basel Committee on Bank Supervision. He has led or contributed to multiple cross-border taskforces, helping in the development of key governance instruments following the financial crisis. Previously, he was Group Chief Compliance Officer of the financial services and insurance multinational, the Zurich Insurance Group.
Gabe is a former President of the Association of Corporate Counsel Europe and is currently Chairman of the Global Governance and Executive Compensation Group. He also serves on monitor teams overseeing governance, compensation, and compliance at companies under remediation. A Juris Doctor graduate of Harvard, Gabe is a regular speaker and moderator at international events. His latest publications include “Governing Remuneration,” “Compensation and Conduct Risk,” “Subsidiary Governance,” “Internal Governance,” “Do Boards Need their Own Budget and Resources?” and “The New Generations Within Boardrooms”.
